RESEARCH GRANTS

As a general rule to qualify for consideration, research applications MUST be for an activity with a focus on older people.

SERENDIPITY AWARDS are the only exception to this rule and need not have a focus on older people. For further information about these awards click here SERENDIPITY AWARDS

JOINT RESEARCH FELLOWSHIPS are intended to expand research capacity in areas designated as a priority by the TRUST and are awarded in partnership with appropriate organizations. For further information about these awards click here FELLOWSHIPS

THE FOCUS OF RESEARCH FUNDING

The key aim is that the Trust’s funding should encourage and support high quality research. To achieve this all research applications are appraised against criteria set out within a RESEARCH FUNDING STRATEGY.

AREAS OF INTEREST

Applications in the following areas are of particular interest to the Trust:

diseases and issues of ageing
the care and environment of older people
disabilities that predominantly affect older people
rehabilitation of older people
initiatives aimed at evaluating and improving patient care or public health
areas where it is difficult to attract funding (e.g. incontinence, end of life research)
pilot studies which could establish whether major studies are justified.

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) can provide multiple types of information on cerebrovascular disease. The left image shows tissue that has been irreversibly damaged by a stroke. The right image shows that the origin was an occlusion in the left internal carotid artery. A further technique, called perfusion mapping, can identify rates of local blood flow within the brain. Regions identified with low flow rates are at greater risk of stroke
