As a rule to qualify for consideration, research applications MUST have a focus on older people and/or ageing.

SERENDIPITY AWARDS are the ONLY exception to this rule and need not have a focus on older people. For further information about these awards click here SERENDIPITY AWARDS

THE FOCUS OF RESEARCH FUNDING

The key aim is that the Trust’s funding should encourage and support high quality research aimed at improving the health and wellbeing of older people. To achieve this all research applications are appraised against criteria set out within a RESEARCH FUNDING STRATEGY.

AREAS OF INTEREST

Applications in the following areas are of particular interest to the Trust:

THE SCALE AND NATURE OF RESEARCH

The Trust is keen to support applied research projects on a smaller scale than are normally considered by major funders such as the Research Councils and the Wellcome Trust.

PRIORITY

Will be given to:

Applicants will be expected to provide a clear demonstration of what the research is expected to achieve within a reasonable time frame, in terms of patient benefit/improving the health and wellbeing of older people.

The Dunhill Medical Trust always receives many more applications than it has the funds to support. Even if a project fits within the criteria and priorities of the Trust and a detailed assessment has been made, the Trust may still be unable to provide a grant.

WHAT CAN BE APPLIED FOR

The Trust will consider applications for direct costs such as staffing, consumables, buildings or equipment for specific purposes related to research within the designated priority areas.

Travel or conference fees will only be supported where these are an integral part of a research project.

Exceptionally, the Trust may endow innovative academic posts within the priority areas.

Although the Trust does not award grants to cover the revenue or capital costs of hospices, research undertaken within a hospice setting is eligible for consideration.

EXCLUSIONS

The Trust will not fund the following:

HOW MUCH

Research grants are normally within the range £10k to £500k.

HOW LONG

Research project grants are normally awarded for a maximum of three years.
Research programme grants may be awarded for longer, normally up to a maximum of five years.

WHO WILL BE SUPPORTED

Grants will normally be made directly to researchers within academic or NHS institutions, rather than through a third party such as a grant-making charity that fundraises. The lead applicant should be the Principal Investigator responsible for the research.

JOINT RESEARCH FELLOWSHIPS

JOINT RESEARCH FELLOWSHIPS are intended to expand research capacity in areas designated as a priority by the TRUST and are awarded in partnership with appropriate organizations.

Currently, the Trust supports Joint Research Fellowships in partnership with the Royal College of Surgeons of England, the Royal College of Physicians and the British Geriatrics Society.

The appointment procedures and closing dates for these vary, and potential applicants need to satisfy specific conditions as set by the TRUST’s partners.
