Work funded by DMT at King’s College London is attempting to establish whether proteins in the brain’s white matter change with the onset of vascular dementia. This autopsy sample has been manipulated so that proteins present in the brain tissue have differentiated to form well-resolved ‘spots’ that can be analysed. Although the Team looked at < 1000 proteins there were only 15 that were unique to vascular dementia (i.e. not changed in stroke without dementia or Alzheimer's disease also present). The task now is to see if these proteins can be positively correlated with clinical symptoms, neurochemical and neuropathological change. If successful this approach might offer a route for the development and delivery of very specific new therapies for dementia.
